OK, for the inaugral “Card of the Week” post, we’re going nostalgic on all fronts. If push came to shove (and it often did, back in the day), and we had to pick an all time favorite player, it would probably be this guy–and if we had to pick a favorite football card set, it would be this set.
So, the first ever The Football Card Blog Card of the Week is the 1982 Topps Tommy Kramer.
Kramer was the Vikings quarterback back in the days when we first started watching football, and some of the earliest memories we have are of him lighting things up late in games, and earning his “Two Minute Tommy” nickname. Even through all of the injuries (and incidents), we’ve always been big Tommy Kramer fans, and even have a small collection of more recent autograph cards (and a jersey) to prove it.
As for the set, it’s purely because this was the main set we had collected while growing up–we ended up with some 1983 Topps, a few 1984 Topps, and some strange cards that to be honest I can’t find off-hand right now, but 1982 was the only set we had a bunch of. And we wore those cards out, constantly sorting, and re-sorting, and playing with them. Thank god we apparently never managed to snag a Ronnie Lott rookie or Lawrence Taylor rookie, ’cause who knows how beat up they would be now (I vaguely remember coming across a Joe Montana In Action card from our ’82 collection a few years ago that had a chunk missing from it–that was painful enough).
So hopefully this is the start of good things to come. I can almost guarantee that you will see more 1982 cards in the future, including some of our old beat up versions, but to kick things off, Tommy Kramer it is.
