This card is for last week, since real life has suddenly started interfering with football card life even more lately (for instance, I started this post about 24 hours ago now).
But the good news is, I actually get to take a vacation this week, and I think I will have my laptop with me to possibly blog from the road (although, just to be safe, I’m going to get next week’s CotW locked and loaded before I leave).
This week, since all I’ve been talking about as of late is the 2007 Bowman Chrome Refractor set I’m putting together, that I would feature a card from the set. So I was going through a stack last night, trying to decide who the lucky player was going to be, and finally settled on Paul Posluszny.
I was a little surprised when I the pricing came out for Bowman Chrome to see that Posluszny was a $5 card–I had left him in my “common” rookies pile, which I don’t bother sleeving or dropping in plastic–not because I didn’t think he was good, but a) he’s a LB, which is a position that seems to get very little love in the market, b) he’s in Buffalo, which seems to get little love in any NFL circle for some inexplicable reason, and c) he wasn’t a first round pick (probably would have been after his junior year, but was 2nd overall in the 2nd round last year).
So, that nice little surprise, along with the fact that he’s wearing #51 (my old number), and the fact that I like typing Posluszny, lead me to pick him. If memory serves, he was having a pretty solid rookie campaign last year, until he was hurt for the year.
The refractor card, which is actually in the picture, books for $8. I actually have three of the refractors for him, all of which came from lot purchases on eBay–two in the lot that lead to my decision to collect the full set, and one in a more recent lot of rookies.
The card also prominantly shows off the Bills uniform–which I happen to think is one of (if not the) ugliest in the NFL. I’m not a big fan of the blocks of different colors on the shoulders, and I think it’s a travesty that they have three shades of blue (navy, a powderish blue stripe on the helmet, and then the original royalish blue buffalo on the helmet). Too bad, too, because when they first switched to red, I absolutely loved the Bills helmet–it was my favorite in the NFL. At some point, I’ll have to do a post about my favorite uniforms–I think I’ve alluded to (or outright said ) what a couple of them are, but I do think that the recent trends in uniforms is disturbing, really across all sports.
For those that are interested, I am currently 49 refractor cards away from the full set of 56-220, but I think I am going to try for the 1-55 set too, so a total of 104 cards away. I may have 1-2 auctions still coming with a few more, though, too. My 2007 Bowman Chrome Refractor Trade List can be found here. (I’ve also added a gallery of football cards, which I imagine will change a lot in the future–right now it’s just past cards of the week, plus a couple of extras that I had scanned).
And like I said, I’m going to try to get another CotW post lined up before I leave, and hopefully add some more while I’m down south. Oh, and a box break will probably be coming next week (unless I get lucky in tomorrow’s mail), as I finally broke down and bought a box of SP Authentic on eBay this past weekend.
